EcoGRID

EcoGRID has been developed as a subprogram of the Virtual Laboratory for e-Science project.

The goal of the subprogram Biodiversity is to establish a e-science problem solving environment (PSE) that facilitates data access and analyses processes. EcoGRID aims at providing researchers, policy-makers and stake-holders with relevant information, visualization and tools.

EcoGRID comprises three parts:

  1. A generic data model
  2. A workflow environment consistent with the datamodel containing a number of relevant and tested analytical techniques.
  3. Software components that can be used to execute the workflows on a distributed system.

Together, these three parts form a system that provides access to the data as well as analysis of nature information that is varying in time and space. The EcoGRID team employs this technology for the following four activities:

  1. Identification - retrieving information (observations, meta-information, modelling results) about a particular type of species or a particular point or region in space or time.
  2. Distribution - the exchange of data, information or knowledge between two or more users.
  3. Integration - the combination of het observations or modelling results beyond the borders of a single type of species and the tight integration with abiotic information.
  4. Analyses - data-mining, statistical analyses and concept driven modelling of the observations. EcoGRID aims at the spatial distributions, the abundances and the temporal changes of Flora and Fauna.
