A web service is, as the name implies, a service that is available through the World Wide Web. Web services are used to connect information systems via the internet. Web services are not intended to communicate with people directly; for that there are web sites or web interfaces.
The EcoGRID will offer various web services to enable other systems to connect to it. This could be a GIS system in the planning and land administration department of a municipality, a web interface designed for a specific application, or even a complex analysis system. Conversely, it will also be possible to connect external databases to the EcoGRID via web services.
The EcoGRID will use existing open standards as much as possible. This allows the use of existing software, and ensures that all users are free to choose which software they wish to use together with EcoGRID.
The web service standards of the OpenGIS Consortium will – where possible – be used by EcoGRID to enable other systems to connect to it. The exact specification of the web services offered by EcoGRID will be given in due time.
